Equipment

We use a wide range of equipment on our paranormal investigations, but, of course, we don't necessarily utilize every item for every investigation. Each investigation is approached on an individual basis and equipment appropriate for that particular investigation is used accordingly.

By the way, all of the investigation equipment pictured is our actual equipment, with the exception of the stock photos with white backgrounds. But those photos are of equipment makes or models we actually use. (Sometimes it's just easier to use a stock image.)

DIGITAL VOICE RECORDERS

digital voice recordersZoom H2 voice recorderThis is one piece of equipment that we use on every investigation, no exceptions. This can also one be of the least expensive pieces of equipment for any ghost investigation group. TSI Paranormal Investigations uses models by Sony, Olympus, and Zoom. Every investigator carries one with them at all times and there are additional units placed throughout a location that record from the beginning of an investigation until the end.

EMF METERS

Mel MeterMel Meter and K-II EMF MeterWe use both the MEL meter and the (somewhat controversial) K-II meters. We have also recently added the Sperry (Lutron) EMF meter (photo to follow).

PC-BASED DIGITAL VIDEO RECORDER

PC-based digital video recorderWe have a PC-based DVR system with 3 cameras (so far) and a wide-screen monitor. We built it ourselves with a LOT of help from our brilliant - and patient - friend, John, from COPS in Ohio. We couldn't have done it without him. Seriously.

DIGITAL VIDEO CAMERAS

digital video camerasWe use and recommend Sony Handycam digital video cameras with infrared Super Night Shot. We've found that the models that record to the hard drive are especially useful as we do not need to worry about changing tapes or disks.

IR EXTENDERS

infrared light extendersSima IR extenderThese are used in conjunction with the hand-held digital video cameras to extend the range at which the camera can "see" in complete darkness. We use several models, including the Sima SL-10IR, Sony HVL-IRM, and the Sony HVL-HIRL. Each has its own pros and cons, but I tend to prefer the HVL-HIRL. It requires a shoe mount on the video camera as it runs from the camera's battery source (which some may consider a negative), but, in my opinion, it gives the best IR light. It does have somewhat of a spotlight effect, but it's much less pronounced - at least on my Sony handycam - than the HVL-IRM.

THERMAL AIR TEMPERATURE GAUGE

digital thermal air temperature gaugeTo measure the air temperature for a cold spot, you must use a tool that specifically measures air temperature. The one we use can do both surface (using the laser pointer directed at a surface area) and ambient air (by attaching the air temperature probe).
