Date: June 20-21, 2008
Time: 9:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.

Background: This was a TAPS (The Atlantic Paranormal Society, also known as the Ghost Hunters on Sci-Fi) event that one of our co-founders was able to attend. The entire primary TAPS team was there: Jason Hawes, Grant Wilson, Steve Gonsalves, Dave Tango, and Kris Williams. Also on hand for the investigation was John Zaffis.

For additional information about Fort Mifflin, please see our subsequent investigation there of August 20, 2008.

Investigation Notes: Attendees were broken up into five groups and each group investigated one of five locations for an hour. At the end of the hour, each group moved on to the next location. The locations were: 1) Blacksmith shop, Sally Port, outside of Artillery Shed, and Commandant's House; 2) Torpedo Casement and Casemate 11; 3) Casemates and flagpole area; 4) Enlisted Quarters; 5) Officers' Quarters.

  1. Sally Port: Most of the hour was spent here doing EVP work. No EVPs in section one at all.
  2. The group was split in half so they could switch between the Torpedo Pit and Casemate 11. Torpedo Casemate: Most of the hour was spent here. EVP work was done, but our group didn't record any. (Note: a previous group could hear audible voices.) One person brought a K-II meter which had a little activity. Casemate 11: EVP work was done, but no evidence was gathered. (Note: Someone from another group got a loud, whispered "Hi" on her recorder.) While standing in the back room of the casement, our co-founder and another member of the group felt a cold sensation on their arms - as though a "cold spot" was standing between them - that eventually dissipated after a few minutes. It was not likely a breeze as no one else felt it (i.e., it did not move through the two rooms).
  3. Casemates: Some time was spent in individual cells and above ground around the flagpole area. However, an EVP was recorded in one of the Casemates (believed to be # 5; it's the one with the desk in it at the end of the cell) when our co-founder was in the cell alone. The voice was not heard at the time the recording was made. Please see the "evidence" section to hear the EVP.
  4. Enlisted Quarters: The entire hour was spent in the large room with the bunk beds in it. EVP work was done, but no evidence was gathered.
  5. Officers' Quarters: The first half of the hour was spent upstairs (which is off limits during the Fort's normal business hours). No evidence was gathered. The second half of the hour was on the ground floor in the second room from the left. A strong perfume-like fragrance was observed; however, upon further investigation, it was found that there were floral bushes in bloom nearby which were probably giving off the fragrance. Our co-founder was alone in the room doing EVP work and got a recording of a child's voice. Again, the voice was not heard at the time the recording was made; it was discovered while listening to the recording later. Please see the "evidence" section to hear the EVP.

Evidence:

EVPsClick the "Play EVP" button to hear the EVP. You will probably need to turn up the volume on your computer. For best results, we recommend that you listen with headphones.
Try listening to the file first to decide what you think is being said before revealing the EVP Result.

Casemate

Location: Casemate

Investigator had asked, "Is there anyone in here who would like to communicate?", which was followed by this sound.

"Riighh"
We're not positive what is actually being said here. It kind of sounds like a drawn-out "right," but missing the hard "t" sound at the end.

Officers' Quarters

Location: Officers' Quarters

Investigator had asked if anyone was in the [empty] room and there was a reply. There are footsteps of people walking overhead on the second floor, but try to listen "around" that.

"I want my mommy..."
After "I want my mommy," the child says "mommy" two more times. Unfortunately, the sound of footsteps makes it hard to hear.

Summary: The entire event was educational (and fun!) and the TAPS guys - and gal - couldn't have been more friendly or generous with their time. In TSI's opinion, Fort Mifflin has its share of ghosts.
